Die Maintenance
die maintenance

Spring retainers can simplify die maintenance. In operation, this example shows that the spring retainer holds the die spring in place under pre-load pressure. An air gap between the spring retainer and the stripper plate isolates the spring’s pre-load pressure from the stripper plate. The stripper plate can be removed and reinstalled (for in-press die repair) without affecting the die spring.

Mold Parting Line Cushion
mold parting line cushion

A spring retainer can be used in conjunction with a die spring in a mold to cushion the parting line and decrease shock and vibration. In operation, this example shows that the die spring cushions the shock between the A-plate and the B-plate when the mold is closed. Several die springs and spring retainers may be required depending on the size of the mold and the amount of cushioning required.

Mold Parting Sequence
mold parting sequence

A spring retainer can be used in conjunction with a die spring in a mold to separate the parting lines in a predetermined sequence. In operation, this example shows that the die spring is compressed between the X-plate and the B-plate when the mold is closed. As the mold opens, the spring provides a force to separate the parting line between the X-plate and the B-plate while keeping the other parting lines closed. After the spring is fully extended to its free length, the other parting lines are free to separate. Several die springs and spring retainers may be required to balanced the force and keep the other parting lines closed while the X/B parting line opens.

Pre-Loading a Die Spring
pre-loading a die spring

A spring retainer can be used to retain and pre-load a die spring. During installation, this example shows that the die spring is pre-loaded between the spring retainer and the die shoe. In operation, A stripper plate applies an upward force to the spring retainer and compresses the die spring. The spring retainer and a socket-head shoulder-screw guide and support the die spring during compression to decrease spring buckling. To improve support for the shoulder-screw, a hole can be drilled or reamed to a depth (d) for the shank of the bolt.
